Orchards in Schools

This wonderful programme has been initiated by the Canterbury Horticulture Society. Each year orchards are planted in 5-6 schools. After starting in 2015 we now have orchards in 17 schools in Christchurch. We supply schools with apple, pear and plum trees. I also visit and support each school as the trees grow. Schools often find that the trees are a great start to growing vegetables. Many schools find that the orchard and garden provide learning opportunities in environment, science and sustainability. Contact Mary if your school would like to be part of Orchards in Schools.

The schools which have planted orchards are:

Isleworth School, Fendalton School, Elmwood School, Wairakei School Gilberthorpe School, Addington School, Chisnallwood Intermediate, Cobham Intermediate, Casebrook Intermediate, Haeata School, Waitakiri School, Rawhiti School, Riccarton School, Kaiapoi Borough School, Oaklands School, Northcote School, St Martins School, Burnside Primary School, Hornby Primary School, South Hornby School, Russley School, Avonhead School, Breens Intermediate, Bishopdale School, Wigram Primary School, Marshland School, andSouth New Brighton School.

Hilmorton High School, Kirkwood Intermediate, Knights Stream School and Belfast School are planting in 2020.
